Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (1st) and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo

The outstanding opposition party (NDC) Member of Parliament for North Tongu has alleged H. E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo and his Government are seriously making preparations deploy Ghanaian troops to Niger as part of the backup forces by the Economis Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to put and end to the country’s new military leadership.

In a Facebook post shared on Saturday 13 August, 2023, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa stated that the President has an intent of Ghana’s offering to  ECOWAS military intervention in Niger that has not been approved by the Parliament of Ghana.

He further added that it would be imprudent for the president should he go ahead with this intent, which is likely to lead to war in West Africa without consulting the people’s representatives..

“The President refusal to submit his Niger policy to Parliament for rigorous scrutiny by Members of Parliament is autocratic very careless”

“West African leaders who claim to be lecturing Niger democracy must be seen leading by example at home”

“Ghana’s gallant soldiers must despise from the looming bloodbath and escalating to geopolitical conflicts which is bound to explode with far-reaching consequences for stability in already volatile regions. He wrote

Ablakwa also stated that the government is in no position to support Ghana Armed Forces if the president goes ahead with this intent because the country is currently bankrupt.

He further stated rather than allowing coup occur, ECOWAS leaders must stand to address challenges facing citizens of member countries.

“Let’s move our focus from the symptoms and start addressing the real issue of bad leaders, corruption, endemic poverty, democracy that works for only few people, and fat cats, massive unemployment, lack of opportunity, state-capture, constitutional manipulation, compromised judiciaries, neo-colonial exploitation and disunited Africa.

And if nothing is done, countries in sub-regions would continue to witness military takeovers. Niger is not the first and might not be the last without an honest, appropriate, introspective, causative. leadership response, he added
